Rangel Tries to Eliminate Opponent in Light of Poor Record on Jobs
Out-of-touch with New Challenges in District
Harlem, NY - Democrat Craig Schley’s campaign today unveiled what it believes is the primary reason that longtime Rep. Charles Rangel has frivolously expended so much energy attempting to toss Schley off the ballot rather than face him on election day: his record on jobs.
“He has misrepresented our petition filings, which the Board of Election has acknowledged, only to cover up a record that has negatively affected many of us in the district. I’m referring to his record on Jobs,” said Schley.
Schley points on that under Rangel’s watch; unemployment in Harlem remains the highest in the city, several percentage points higher than the rest of the city.
“Mr. Rangel is out-of-touch and should be replaced by a proven leader who has a better understanding of the new realities. I respect him for all he has accomplished, but today’s challenges require leadership more in tune with our modern economy,” added Schley. “When black male unemployment hovers over 50% in the district, there has been a failure of leadership, understanding, compassion and caring. My history and background have prepared me to face these challenges head on and bring about solutions for today’s problems.”
Schley noted in a book published by Dr. Manning Marable, a Columbia African History Professor, titled “Living Black History,” that the issues of the Civil Rights era are much different than the issues that face many inner city communities today. Today’s issues are mass unemployment, mass incarceration and mass disenfranchisement. “Rangel has failed to adjust to the new realities facing residents in this district and it is the residents who suffer the price. I will continue fighting for the issues facing us today,” said Schley.

Friends;
In addition to challenging our petitions at the Board of Elections - an attempt that has already failed - Desiree Harris, one of Charles Rangel’s former team members is taking us to court.
Don’t worry, our petitions will withstand any objections. We ask Rangel to put a halt to this useless attempt to stop us and have put out a press release (below). In the meantime we keep campaigning as usual. But this challenge just shows that the old guard is afraid of us.
That’s a good thing.
Craig

Rangel’s Desperation Grows as the Board of Election Report Favors Schley

Rangel decided that the voters should be stripped of their right to vote. He is trying to throw us off the ballot so you don’t have a choice on Primary Day, June 26.
Our campaign poses a threat to the status quo that permitted a few to benefit at the expense of the rest. He fears our campaign and would rather FIGHT US IN COURT THAN AT THE BALLOT BOX.
I will earn the trust and vote of residents in this district, but need your help to fight Rangel in court. With your help we will beat him at the ballot box and give voters in our district a real choice on Primary Day.

Dear friends and supporters,
I am a Democrat, always was and always will be. But I fight every day to represent everyone in this district - Democrats, Independent and Republicans - a job the other candidates are not willing to do. This is why I have just accepted the endorsement by the Republican Party. A number of important Dominican-American community leaders endorsed me as well and our coalition is growing. But these are just first steps.
Now, lets win the Democratic Primary on June 26 together!
Your candidate,
Craig Schley

New York, NY - Last weekend Democrat Craig Schley’s campaign against Rep. Charles Rangel and New York State Sen. Adriano Espaillat scored big victories and began the promise of unifying the new 13th Congressional District. One endorsement comes from a large number of Dominican-Americans in the district which poses a big blow to Espaillat who is Dominican himself. Another comes from a party that had previously cross-endorsed Charles Rangel six times, the Republican Party, who now sees Schley as a unifying force in the new District.
Stop and Frisk is a citywide problem, but the numbers for the 13th Congressional District show why we Harlemites need to take a lead on ending the civil rights abuse.
In East Harlem’s 23rd precinct, which stretches from 96th to East 115th streets, 17,498 people were stopped in 2011 — the most in the borough and the sixth-most citywide, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union which is in the process of analyzing the 2011 data for a new report.
Coming in second in the borough was Central Harlem’s 32nd precinct, where 12,859 people were stopped last year, the 18th most citywide. Inwood and Washignton Heights’s 34th precinct came in third, with 11,548 stops — 23rd among the city’s 70-plus precincts, the data show.
The Midtown South precinct, which spans Times Square, Penn Station and 34th Street, recorded 10,665 stops in 2011, placing it fourth in Manhattan and 28th citywide.
And another section of East Harlem, covered by the 25th precinct north of E. 116th Street and east of Fifth Avenue, saw 9,926 stops in 2011, making it fifth in the borough.
You’ve got six days left to submit your 2011 federal tax return. April 17 is this year’s deadline.
Here are some last-minute resources:
- Tax Forms and Publications
- Publication 17 — The Only Tax Guide Most Individuals Need (PDF)
- Tax Benefits — You May Qualify
- E-file Your Taxes
Within 72 hours of e-filing or 4 weeks of mailing a paper return, you can check your refund status.
If you cannot file your tax return by the deadline, then request an extension. Keep in mind that an extension does not give you additional time to pay if you owe taxes. You’ll need to estimate the amount you owe and submit a payment in order to avoid interest and penalty charges.
